Beach Vacations

One of my family’s favorite places to visit is the beach. We’ve explored several beach towns along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. We’ve camped, stayed in hotels, and enjoyed multi-bedroom condos. Honestly, there’s no wrong place to stay on a vacation to the beach. We love the sun, the sand, the waves, and the slower pace we experience every time we visit. Here’s everything we consider when planning a family trip to the coast. Let’s start with why we keep coming back to the beach year after year.

Why Choose a Beach Vacation

There are so many reasons we choose to vacation at the beach at least once a year. My husband jokes that we’re solar-powered people—meaning we need dedicated time soaking up the sun to function at our best. Joke or not, we always feel better after a week at the beach. The health benefits of the sun, sand, and sea are a major draw for us. The vitamin D, the salty air, and the relaxed pace help us reset. There’s something about slowing down enough to put our feet in the sand that refreshes both our hearts and minds.

We also love the many opportunities for adventure. From building sandcastles and racing in and out of the surf to jumping waves, snorkeling in bays, and kayaking with dolphins at sunrise, there are so many incredible experiences that come with a vacation to the beach. The best part for me (and for our budget) is that most of the fun is built-in. We spend hours swimming in the ocean, building epic sand cities, and soaking up the sun, and it rarely costs anything extra.

Types of Beach Vacations

Once you’ve decided a beach trip is right for you, the next step is figuring out what kind of vacation to the beach fits your family’s travel style. The type of beach trip you choose depends on the vibe you’re looking for. You could go for a tropical destination, a laid-back coastal city, a beachside campground, or even an all-inclusive resort.

Tropical Beaches
Nothing quite says vacation like the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. We recently took a 3-night cruise to the Bahamas with MSC, and it was a lovely experience. The all-inclusive nature of cruises removes the stress of budgeting and allows the adults to truly rest. One of our cruise days was spent at a private beach, where we loved the white sands and calm, clear waters. We snorkeled and discovered small sea creatures and fish. We only wished we had more time on the tropical island! If you opt for a longer cruise, you can enjoy multiple beach days at different destinations.

Coastal City Beaches
Coastal city beach vacations also have plenty of perks. You have easy access to restaurants, nice hotels or condos, grocery stores, and paid excursions. Some of our favorite beach towns include Hilton Head Island, Savannah (or nearby Tybee Island), Garden City, and Jacksonville Beach. In each of these places, we’ve found affordable beachfront lodging, clean beaches, and great local restaurants. We also love renting bikes in these towns—it’s an easy and fun way to get from your accommodations to the ocean.

Beach Camping
If you’re craving an outdoor adventure, we recommend beach camping at Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina. The campground is affordable and well-maintained, with clean bathhouses and direct beach access. We’ve returned several times over the years and always enjoy the park’s trails, the historic lighthouse, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves.

All-Inclusive Resorts
While we haven’t yet stayed at an all-inclusive beach resort, we’re hoping to visit one for spring break 2026. These resorts are packed with fun and luxury—from beachside access and endless restaurants to waterslides, excursions, and incredible rooms. We’re planning to visit Dreams Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. If you’ve been, I’d love to hear about your experience!

Planning Your Beach Vacation

There are many factors that go into planning our family beach vacations. I always start with a few questions: how much time do we have, are we driving or flying, how much have we saved, and what season are we traveling in?

Best Times to Visit

No matter what type of beach destination you choose, timing your trip can make a big difference in both price and experience for your vacation to the beach. Here’s what we’ve learned from years of beach trips:

🏖️ U.S. Beaches (Southeast)

  • Best time to go: Late May or early June — warm enough for the water, but not unbearably hot.
  • Peak season: June to August — book early to get the best lodging and avoid high-season pricing.
  • Spring and fall visits: Great for smaller crowds and lower prices. Many beaches are still warm enough for swimming.
  • Off-season perks: Easier parking, quieter atmosphere, and budget-friendly rates.

🌴 Caribbean Destinations

  • Peak season: December to April — warm, dry weather and a welcome escape from cold northern winters.
  • Hurricane season: June through November — great deals are common, but travel insurance is a must.
  • Weather tip: Tropical beaches often have brief afternoon rain showers, even in peak season, bring a light rain jacket just in case.

☀️ Off-Season Considerations

  • Pros:
    • Lower prices on accommodations and flights
    • Fewer crowds at restaurants and beaches
    • Greater flexibility with last-minute bookings
  • Cons:
    • Some attractions or restaurants may operate on limited hours
    • Slightly less predictable weather — be flexible and pack accordingly

Budgeting for Your Beach Getaway

Planning a vacation to the beach doesn’t have to break the bank, but it’s important to think through your biggest expenses in advance. From accommodations and transportation to meals and activities, here’s how we approach budgeting for beach trips of all kinds.

Accommodation Costs

Where you stay can have the biggest impact on your beach vacation budget. Prices can vary a lot depending on location, season, and style of lodging.

  • Beachfront hotels or resorts: Offer amazing views and convenience, but come with a higher price tag during peak season. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Jacksonville Beach in the late summer, and the beachfront access, onsite restaurant, and waterfall pool made it worth the cost. My kids are still asking to go back and stay at this hotel!
  • Vacation rentals and condos: Great for families or longer stays. Look for deals in the off-season or book early for better rates.
  • Camping or state park lodges: An affordable way to enjoy the beach, especially in places like Hunting Island, SC or Fort De Soto, FL.

Transportation Expenses

How you get there, and how you get around, can also affect your budget on your vacation to the beach.

  • Driving is often the most cost-effective for nearby beach towns and gives you flexibility once you arrive.
  • Flying may be necessary for Caribbean or West Coast destinations. Be sure to watch for deals and consider flying midweek to save. We’ve often found much better deals when we choose the “flexible dates” option on our searches. You can find our favorite flight search tools in this post.
  • Car rentals can add up, especially during holidays or in tourist-heavy destinations. If your beach destination is walkable or has public transit, you might be able to skip the rental altogether.

Dining and Activities

Food and fun are big parts of any vacation to the beach, but they don’t have to cost a fortune.

  • Pack snacks and groceries if you’re staying in a rental with a kitchen, it cuts down on restaurant costs.
  • Plan for one or two splurge meals, then enjoy casual beach bites or picnic lunches the rest of the time.
  • Free or low-cost activities like swimming, shell hunting, beach walks, and building sandcastles make beach vacations surprisingly budget-friendly. Our kids love playing restaurant on the beach. They build sand tables, use their beach frisbees as dishes, and create “delicious” meals out of dry sand, wet sand, and seashells. This open-ended activity keeps them happy for hours.
  • Excursions and rentals (like paddleboards, kayaks, or snorkeling trips) can add up. Choose one or two standout experiences, and skip the rest.

Essential Packing List

When you’re heading out on a vacation to the beach, having the right gear can make all the difference, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Here’s what we always pack for a fun, safe, and comfortable beach vacation:

Beach-Specific Clothing & Accessories

  • Two swimsuits per person – So you’re never putting on a damp suit for round two.
  • Rashguards and sun hats – A must-have during peak UV hours to protect your skin.
  • Easy-to-clean sandals – We love Crocs for the beach and pool. They don’t rub when wet and slip on and off easily.
  • Water shoes – Great for rocky beaches or areas with sharp shells.
  • Lightweight beach umbrella – Ours sets up in seconds and can be done by one person, which is a lifesaver for solo parents.

Sun Protection Essentials

  • Neutrogena sunscreen stick – Perfect for quick application on faces and ears.
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen – Our go-to for full-body protection without feeling greasy.
  • Battery-powered fans – Handy for cooling off during the hottest part of the day, especially for kids.

Water & Beach Gear

  • Mesh backpack for sand toys – Easy to rinse and shake out sand.
  • Snorkel sets – We love looking for fish and sea creatures near the shore without booking a tour.
  • Mesh bag for shells – We collect rocks and shells as souvenirs, and this keeps them all in one place.
  • Life jackets or puddle jumpers – When our kids were younger, puddle jumpers gave them confidence in the water and helped them learn to swim.
  • Beach chairs or camp chairs – If we’re driving, we bring one per person so everyone has a place to relax.

Beach Activities and Experiences

There’s more to a family beach vacation than just soaking up the sun (though we love doing that, too!). Whether you’re seeking adventure on the water or looking for relaxing and culturally rich experiences, beach towns offer something for every kind of traveler.

Water Sports and Adventures

One of the reasons we return to the beach year after year is the endless opportunity for outdoor fun. These activities are perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to explore beyond the shoreline.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
Some of our favorite beach memories involve snorkeling right from the shore, especially in the Bahamas and on calm barrier islands with crystal-clear water. When we visited Biscayne National Park, we booked a guided snorkel tour to explore reefs farther out, and it was the highlight of the trip. The kids loved spotting colorful fish and learning about the underwater ecosystem, and we’d definitely do it again. If you’re headed somewhere tropical, consider a guided snorkel or scuba excursion to make the most of the vibrant marine life.

Boogie Boarding
If you’re heading to a beach on the Atlantic, don’t overlook boogie boarding. It’s a fun and easy way for kids (and adults!) to enjoy the waves. My kids have loved riding the surf since they were toddlers, and it’s often one of the first activities they run to after dropping bags at the beach house. We’ve even found some of our favorite boogie boards at local grocery stores in beach towns.

Surfing for Beginners and Pros
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned surfer, there are great surf destinations for every level. Jacksonville Beach and Tybee Island are great places to take a beginner’s lesson, while places like Cocoa Beach or Folly Beach are known for their consistent waves.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding
Paddling is one of our favorite family-friendly beach activities. It’s peaceful, accessible, and often gives you a front-row seat to incredible wildlife like dolphins, birds, and even manatees. We love to stay in rental homes on the bay that include kayaks or paddle boards so we can go at sunrise, sunset, or anytime in between. We once kayaked with dolphins at sunrise on the bay of Anna Maria Island, and with manatee at sunrise in Crystal River – both absolutely incredible experiences we’ll remember forever.

Relaxation, Wellness, and Cultural Experiences

Not every beach day has to be action-packed. Some of our best vacation memories come from the slower moments, like trying local food, watching a sunset, or browsing a gallery in a small beach town.

Spa Treatments and Beachside Relaxation
If you’re staying at a resort or beachfront hotel with a spa, make time for a little wellness. A massage with an ocean view or a post-sun facial can be the perfect way to unwind. I’m hoping to take full advantage of the beachfront spa at our stay at Dreams Resort in Punta Cana next year.

Seafood and Coastal Cuisine
I have a seafood allergy, so I’m unfortunately not able to enjoy this part of being close to the ocean—but my husband and son definitely make up for it! They love sampling fresh fish in the beach towns we visit. We rely on Google Maps and Reddit to track down the best local restaurants with the freshest catch. Some of their favorite meals have been fresh oysters and shrimp in South Carolina beach towns and grouper fingers on Anna Maria Island in Florida.

Coastal Art Scenes and Galleries
We love exploring the creative side of beach towns. Savannah’s historic district is full of unique galleries and local artists. Hilton Head has some charming shops and public art displays tucked around its bike paths and parks. It’s a great way to connect with the culture and bring home a meaningful souvenir. If you love experiencing culture, consider planning your trip around an art walk, local festival, or seasonal event that highlights the creative spirit of the beach town you’re visiting.

Sustainable Beach Tourism

As much as we love beach vacations, we also want to make sure these beautiful destinations stay pristine for future travelers. Sustainable beach tourism is all about enjoying the coast while being mindful of our impact. From the places we stay to the way we interact with marine life, small choices can add up to big differences. Here are a few easy ways your family can travel more responsibly on your next vacation to the beach.

Eco-friendly Beach Practices

As travelers, we always try to leave the beach better than we found it. Picking up trash we see, packing out everything we brought, and leaving no trace are simple but powerful habits. Many beach towns also host cleanup days or have bins specifically for beach litter, and joining in is a great way to model environmental responsibility for kids. We also love stopping by nature centers or wildlife refuges, where we often learn something new and help fund local conservation efforts.

Protecting Marine Life

If you’re snorkeling or diving, remember to observe marine life without touching or disturbing it. Reef-safe sunscreen while you’re snorkeling helps protect coral and sea creatures from harmful chemicals, and it’s an easy switch to make before your trip. We have used and loved the Blue Lizard brand of reef-safe sunscreen. On land, if you spot wildlife like birds, turtles, or seals on the shore, enjoy the moment from a distance. Don’t disturb sea turtle nests, and be sure to fill in any large holes your family digs during beach play. These simple choices help preserve the natural beauty that draws us to the coast for a vacation to the beach in the first place.

Beach Safety and Etiquette

A fun beach day starts with knowing how to stay safe and respectful. Whether you’re swimming in unfamiliar surf or visiting a beach in another country, understanding local rules and customs can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here are some practical safety tips and thoughtful etiquette to consider on your next vacation to the beach, no matter where your travels take you.

Understanding Beach Safety

Before jumping into the waves on your next vacation to the beach, take a moment to check the beach flag system. Those colorful flags tell you a lot about surf conditions, jellyfish warnings, dangerous currents, or dangerous marine life. If you’re unsure, always ask a lifeguard or do a quick google search for your area. Teach kids how to spot rip currents and what to do if caught in one (swim parallel to the shore until out of the current). Sun protection, shade, SPF, and hydration are key to staying safe in the heat, especially during the afternoons in summer.

Beach Etiquette Around the World

Beach expectations can vary by destination. In some places, modest swimwear is the norm, especially near religious or conservative communities. Always research local customs ahead of our vacation to the beach. Wherever you go, it’s important to respect the natural habitat. Don’t touch wildlife, trample dunes, or remove shells and rocks. Keep music at a considerate volume and give others plenty of space to enjoy the beach too. A little courtesy goes a long way in keeping beach spaces welcoming for everyone.

Making the Most of Your Vacation to the Beach

Whether you’re relaxing under a beach umbrella, exploring local trails, or paddling alongside dolphins, a vacation to the beach offers the perfect balance of adventure and downtime. We’ve found that the best trips blend both slow mornings with coffee and a view, and afternoons filled with new experiences.

Don’t forget to capture the moments that matter! Natural light during golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) makes for beautiful beach photos. Get candid shots of your family building sandcastles, jumping waves, or sharing a beachside treat. These unscripted memories are always my favorites.

And wherever you go, lean into what makes each beach town special. Eat the local food, chat with shop owners, visit markets, and join community events if you can. Embracing local experiences not only enriches your trip, it helps support the places we love to visit so they stay vibrant for years to come.
